Father of two Troop 3 Eagle Scouts passed away


Dick Kinney, a former Troop 3 adult leader and retired Abilene Police K-9 officer and Taylor County Bailiff, passed away on Sunday, January 6th, 2019. Him and his wife were active with Troop 3 when Mike Sr. and Shirley Noe started working with Troop 3 in the early 70’s. Two of his sons, Mike (T3 Eagle 1975) and Billy (T3 Eagle 1978, are Troop 3 Eagles.

James Richard “Dick” Kinney, 89, of Abilene passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019 in Abilene.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11 AM at the Crescent Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Friday, January 11, from 6 to 8 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home.

Dick was born on April 3, 1929 in Stamford, Texas to the late William Newton Kinney and Lillian Florine Randall Kinney. He married Marie Goolsby on August 5, 1950 in Roby, Texas. Dick served the City of Abilene honorably for 28 years as a police officer. 10 of those years he was a K-9 unit. He then went on to work for Taylor County Sherriff Department as a bailiff for 10 years. Dick was a member of the Texas Municipal Police Association and served as President and Sargent of Arms as well as on the Board of Directors. He was an active member of Crescent Heights Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and assisted with refurbishing 2 properties owned by the church. Dick was also very active in Boy Scouting, was a wood carver and gifted artist.
